African Drum Class Rhythm Notation

October 10, 2009

Ged Cusack has graciously organized the West African drum rhythms that I have been handing out in the all levels Tuesday night African drum class.

He has created order (using excel) out of chaos (my hand written rhythm notation handouts)   :-)   Thanks Ged!

Here are a few of the rhythms we have learned. Just click on them and save a copy to your computer. Then you can print them out and keep them in a folder.

For more elaborate djembe and djunjun variations including the meaning of the rhythm and the dance go to the West African Percussion Pages

Happy drumming!

What are the meanings of doundounbah, lamba, ku-ku and strong man? What do the songs celebrate?

Hi Andy,

This is a website that has all the meanings for these rhythms and information on when they are played… http://www.paulnas.eu/wap/

Kind regards,

Jeff
