House of Pleiades Project

June 25, 2009

Here is the new video from our show at the Loons Club,

We are a collection of musicians who come together on a regular basis under the name of “the House of Pleiades.” We are from diverse cultures and nationalities. Our philosophy is “to create an environment that helps break down cultural barriers.”  We use music as a medium to achieve this. All cultures and religions are welcome to participate and share their musical roots. We incorporate blues/jazz/soul and african/asian/ polynesian rhythms. We are from different cultures and nationalities.

Concept behind the name:

We wanted to use a name that had universal cultural significance. Pleiades was attractive for many reasons. In ancient times most cultures were aware of the star cluster and had corresponding mythology related to it. It is known under many different names. Here some examples,

  • Matariki: New Zealand Maori
  • Subaru: Japanese
  • Mao: Chinese
  • Khuseti: Africa
  • Kilimia: Swahili
  • Neith: Persia
  • Makara: Australian Aboriginal
  • Krittika: India
  • At thuraiya: Islam

It is attractive because of the genealogical ties the Maori have with Pleiades (Matariki) and other star systems.

The House of Pleiades is a conceptual house. It is built of four walls representing the four winds. The house also represents a woman’s womb or in a broader sense, the womb of humanity, and is the perfect environment to create unity through the coming together of communities, cultures and ethnic groups using music and dance as a medium. Along each wall are pillars representing each cultural group and beside each pillar are the instruments pertaining to that culture. Music is the foundation. Jimmy Brennan and Tini Te Rangiita have created this band/project with an ancient ancestor, the Pleiades, as a core inspiration.

Every culture on earth is represented, and all cultures are welcome within the House of Pleiades.

The only requirement needed to enter the house is that you share your history and story with everyone else.
